Klondike
How to Play Klondike, and a Few Tips
Build the tableau (the seven columns in the middle) in alternating colors and descending order. Move every suit up to its foundation — the four slots on the right — from ace to king, and you win.
Only a king can start an empty tableau column. Aces move to their foundation automatically the moment they're exposed, and once every tableau card is face up, the game keeps auto-completing whatever it can. Drawing from the stock is always left to you, though, since redeals affect your score.
Undo reverses your last move, and if no moves seem to be left, you'll be asked whether to start over.
Points build up on an exact schedule: sending a card to a foundation is +15, moving from the waste to the tableau is +5, and flipping a face-down card is +5. Moving a card back down from a foundation costs -10, and redealing the stock costs -15.
A difficulty multiplier applies on top — Draw 1 Unlimited is ×1.0 (the baseline), Draw 1 Limit 3 is ×1.2, Draw 3 Unlimited is ×1.3, and Draw 3 Limit 3 (the hardest) is ×1.5. Win within 5 minutes (300 seconds) and every second you saved is added as a speed bonus, so finishing fast pays off.
The four combinations differ so much in difficulty that each one keeps its own leaderboard — the same skill can land you in very different rankings depending on which combination you picked.
You can draw one card at a time or three. Draw 1 lets you work through the stock one card at a time, which makes planning easier. Draw 3 flips three cards at once but only the top one is playable, so the card you actually need can get buried underneath — closer to the harder 'Vegas rule' found at casinos.
The redeal limit is a hard-mode toggle that caps how many times you can cycle the stock back through at 3. Unlimited mode lets you keep cycling until you find a move, but under the limit every redeal counts, so you have to think harder about when to use one.
Combining both axes gives four difficulty levels, from Draw 1 Unlimited (easiest) to Draw 3 Limit 3 (hardest). If you're new, start with Draw 1 Unlimited to learn the ropes before working up to tougher combinations.
Don't rush cards to the foundation. Once a card is up there, it can no longer receive other cards in the tableau — if keeping it in play would let you flip more face-down cards, it's often better to leave it a little longer.
Checking the waste pile before you move helps you plan ahead for which card you'll need next as you clear the tableau.
When a tableau column empties out, don't rush to fill it with whatever king you're holding. Sometimes it's worth leaving it open until a king shows up that actually unblocks something.
When you have more than one move available, favor the one that flips a new card or clears a column over one that just shuffles the board — it keeps your options open even if the immediate score is the same.
Sending every ace and two to the foundation the instant you see it. It looks efficient, but if that card was the only thing letting you build onto the tableau, you can box yourself in.
Cycling through the stock in Draw 3 with no plan. Under the redeal-limited combinations, this burns through your three redeals before you actually need one.
Filling an empty column with the first king you have. A better king that would actually unblock your game might be coming up soon, and once the column's full, there's nowhere left to put it.
